On December 28th in 1610, Galileo Galilei recorded the first mention of Jupiter's moons. At first thinking them to be fixed stars near the gas giant, his later observations revealed them to be orbiting Jupiter. Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto are now known as the Galilean moons. #astronomy
