The Peachtree Westin (also Portman) originally had an oasis themed lobby with plants and waters. Now it's stripped down, dry, and sterile.

I might disagree with you a bit here… I think the large open atrium is more aesthetically pleasing than cramped hallways. You also don't need to have a bunch of support columns blocking sight lines & foot paths on the atrium level.

Cf. the difference between the MFF/FWA hotels vs. F2's hotel.
