The framework we operate within, designed for an era vastly different from today, has struggled to evolve alongside societal changes. Relentless focus on standards & metrics, often disconnected from skills & knowledge children need in the 21st century, highlights the inertia at the heart of policy.

The burden placed on educators to fill gaps left by underfunded or overstretched services has created an unsustainable system. Teachers are asked to shoulder responsibilities far beyond their expertise, often without resources or training to manage them effectively.

While dedication & compassion of the profession are undeniable, lack of structural support makes genuine, long-term impact difficult to achieve. Reform is clearly essential, yet challenge lies in aligning political will, funding & societal priorities. The system risks collapsing under its own weight

The expectation to wear multiple hats, educator, social worker, mental health practitioner and more, without the proper time, resources, or training, is not only unrealistic but unfair. It often feels like a sticking plaster on a much larger systemic issue.

Current demands on educators reflect misunderstanding of what schools can reasonably achieve without comprehensive support from services. It’s not a failure to lack expertise in areas far removed from our professional training; it’s a failure of the system to recognise & address these gaps.

Admitting these limitations isn't a weakness, it's a call for a more sustainable, collaborative approach where education, social services & healthcare work together to meet the complex needs of children & their families.

Until then, the burden on schools will remain overwhelming and unsustainable.
