The “low expectations” argument is lazy. Schools don’t exist in a vacuum—they reflect their communities. Where there’s poverty, poor housing & insecure jobs, schools feel that strain. Kids can’t focus if they’re hungry, stressed or see no future. Fixing education means fixing the system around it.

Parents aren’t “hard to reach” - they’re exhausted or don’t feel welcome.

Many want to help but lack confidence or time. Schools should be community hubs where parents access support—job training, mental health services & family workshops. Education should lift whole families, not just kids.

Health & wellbeing are massive barriers to learning. Kids in deprived areas often face poor diet, stress & trauma. Schools should have on-site mental health workers, nurses & links to social services. It’s not about “excuses”—it’s about removing barriers so ambition isn’t just a pipedream.

Real change needs investment, patience & joined-up thinking. But politicians prefer slogans over solutions. Schools alone can’t fix generational poverty. They need to be hubs of support—giving kids & families tools to thrive. High expectations mean nothing if the path to success is blocked.
