I think you can and people will respect it. Saying you’ll prioritize certain projects or even have the right to decline isn’t out of line. It’s still your time and you can make those rules for your art 🩷

It's mostly- I have a FT job, so any comms I take cut into my 'art for personal therapy/relaxation' time, so I wanna be able to work on things I'm, like, super jazzed to work on, and that are in line with bolstering the skills I'm trying to learn- does that make sense?

I used to be a muralist, and when art was my job, day in and day out, I never had the energy to create what I wanted to, and I wound up stopping art for almost a decade. I don't wanna burn myself out like that again

this is completely 100% understandable! maybe u can work up a quick sheet with what kind of slots are available and what you want to convey or practice for each piece. then people who are interested can ask for the specific characters or scenario while u still maintain lots of creative freedom.
