Yes, those long legs and “who, me?” attitude are priceless.
Only parents who build nests splat in the middle of everything on the ground, and defend it by shrieking and trying to distract onlookers, could produce such chickies.

A family ran past me into the ditch, one tiny chick scarcely able to walk. I picked it up & found it had a big dried ball of mud on one foot, but found I could crumble it off. It went running after its family. It was almost exactly like an adult except for being a bit babyish. Great memory.

I helped a killdeer parent get its chick across a 4-lane road by blocking traffic. Then had to pick up the chick to help it over a curb, so it could keep following the parent.

duckling, but ended up in the pond, too wet to fly away, mobbed by Muscovy moms. I got scratched as I picked it up, but crated it till it was dry and could fly off. I bet it didn't try THAT again. I never seem to have a camera - except for the hawk once it was in the crate...❤️

My best bird rescue story was a beached masked booby!

It was reported by a birder as a possibly injured bird and it showed up on the eBird RBA

In went to bird the bird when the top birder in OC and another birder and I boxed it up and drove it to the nearest rehab center

I've sometimes helped birds out of difficulties, like during an academic conference I heard cheeping outside the window, found ducklings fallen through a grate into the window well. I removed the grate, climbed down & lifted them out to their concerned mother, who took them away from the danger.

At dusk and dawn is great! Overcast is good too

Give you until like 9:30am.

But they like to be out during the day.

Lighting is okay when you’re under a tree and they wander towards you 😂
