The use of “the” as in “the Hawke’s Bay” is an unnecessary use of this definite article in the identification of said province. You don’t say The Wellington or The Canterbury or even The Auckland or The Southland - Hawke’s Bay is no different in this case 😌

But we still don’t say The Hawke’s Bay, like you shouldn’t say The Bay of Plenty or The Wairarapa or The Waikatō - “the” in these cases is not required nor part of their names

The (water) bay was named Hawke Bay after Edward Hawke, Frist Lord of the Admiralty (Cook's boss.... brown-noser!)
Later the (land) bay was named Hawke's Bay.
