You are right but also "Celtic" is not an actual descriptor for a certain group of people.

Celtic is an umbrella term that encompasses a network of people who lived within the areas of Ireland, Scotland, Isle of Man, more north European states. Imbolc was celebrated among the Irish but others too.

While most of our information about imbolc comes from ireland, it was not societally exclusive and spanned across the entire celtic regions, "imbolc" as a term was popularized by a an Irish bishop and scholar named Cormac mac Cuilennáin, but he only described and expanded on imbolc, not invented.

This is a fair thing to point out! It does crop up in generally Celtic spaces. Iirc Lughnasadh is to my knowledge the only one of the four that is exclusive to Ireland in its early iterations, but this was a post born more out of general frustration so I was far too simplistic.

I will note as a practitioner, however, that the deities involved with all the major festivals within lore *are* Irish, so it seems fair to speculate that the practice emigrated outwards from that point rather than existing equally throughout the nations.

While the themes and purposes of the festivals is often *similar* in tone, I have yet to see a single non-Irish pagan on this site specify the origins or share adequate information. They are not Celtic. They are not Pagan. They are Irish.

This is supposed to be the good website y’all, do your work.

Honest and not mean spirited question: if a non-Irish practitioner worships Brigid and therefore celebrates Imbolc to honour her, what is your take on this? As well the working with Brigid as well as celebrating Imbolc?

As long as you have right relationship! Do your research and focus on prioritizing native Irish resources. Even if you don’t consider yourself an Irish pagan you are working with a deity who is specific to Ireland.
