I've been getting a random follower or two daily for a long time and all I do is repost art. I'm thinking they're bots but I don't know who'd bother creating an army of bots here of all places

I normally reshare my own stuff and it gets new likes and shares after that, so a new follower every so often isn't unusual

But a bunch of new followers out of the blue without any activity? That's... odd

As someone else mentioned, that sounds like someone recently added you to a new-user Starter Pack of accounts to watch. Have you taken a look at the new accounts, to see if they are people who are also following similar artists?

A few are like TF enthusiasts, definitely. But it seems like the majority are very similar politics heavy accounts that just post nothing but political stories…
