there's no feeling quite like finishing a 200+ hour game campaign and then socialising with people who don't play video games being like "yeah no not much how have you been doing? π"

I have played final fantasy 7 twice and I always stop immediately after leaving midgar. it's going to be such a special day when I see the rest of the game
I played ff7 on the ps1 in the 90s in highschool.
I must have played through the game at least 6 or 7 times, sometimes 30hrs other times closer to 100hrs.
Never owned any X Box, or went past the ps2, thought I did get a wii & switch.
I play what could be seen as a very outdated game. I have never had anyone, aside from people in-game, to talk to about it. I've even lost touch with many of them.
Talking to people that only watch football and seemingly have no form of entertainment or art appreciation whatsoever was a challenge at my previous workplace, like...what do you do for fun besides drinks and watch sports?
Coworker: What did you do this weekend?
Me thinking about dragons slain, dark gods defeated, and tyrannical sci fi dictatorships overthrown on an alien planet: Not much, did laundry and chilled mostly
i put 800 hours into baldur's gate three over the course of august 2023 to august 2024 and only finally snapped out of it cuz i finally got distracted enough by election stuff. i then realized i had kinda, sorta, lost a year of my life
That's kind of how finishing Outer Wilds was for me. One of the most epic video game experiences I've ever had, and I can't talk about it. Non-gamers don't care and I don't ever want to spoil it for gamers. It has to remain a total mystery that people just stumble upon by accident.
Absolutely brilliant game. Still haven't finished echoes of the eye, but I was enthralled w the core game. It was one of the freshest experiences I'd had with a game in a long time. And I completely get not wanting to spoil it -- the discovery is what makes it!
Echoes of the Eye is really good, though a bit more challenging than the base game I thought (until you "figure it out"), but story-wise it's amazing, it definitely adds to the base story and puts things in a different light. One of the best DLCs I've ever played.
Kinda how I feel about one piece. Normies won't care, other one piece fans will go "yeahhhh dude it's almost as cool as *egregious whole cake spoiler I was mere episodes away from*"
Then there's the one piece fans at an earlier point than I and I have to bite my tongue about so many things.
I beat Metaphor ReFantazio in little over a week(lost a lot a sleep) and immediately felt like "No it's over already?" despite my final save clocking in at 130:13. Studio Zero knocked it out of the park, amazing game overall.
A few years back, I finished A Link To The Past. Only died 34 times before beating the game. But I talked with some people after beating it, and they had no idea what I was talking about.
Drives me nuts. And as a game developer working on gamesβ¦even socializing with those people, they still dont want to talk about games π«. I think games are also just too expensive now and inaccessible. Telling someone about a game you played for 200 hours is like telling them about a dream you had.
I play WOW, every day...8-16 hours a day. Non gamers are like...so, how are you handling retirement ? I Go on for 20 minutes about dragon riding, dungeons, killing bosses and delves before I notice they fell asleep standing up
I put 5,000 hours into Guild Wars 2 & over 1,000 hours into Final Fantasy 14, and I'm so thankful I have friends around me that get it and play with me π
I tell my mom I've just been playing video games and reading so I don't have to try to explain I've spent the last year and change writing fanfiction about a gay angel and demon.
"Oh, just been playing a factory management game."
"...okay."
"It's pretty relaxing watching your conveyor belts."

How do you like the remake?
Nah (having played power wash simulator nonstop for 48 hours)
Uhhh no.

-average conversation i have with people.
I completely understand what you mean.
I mean, yeah, the weekend was crazy!

Also me: I've played almost exclusively Metaphor:ReFantazio for the last two weeks
I just donβt understand how people never take consideration of what weβve been playing and thought that itβs about nothing.
