More people need to hear the context that the "first they came" poem isn't only about a man regretting his indifference, but it is written by a largely unrepentantly bigoted man realising that hating the right people never actually protected him.

Exactly. They simultaneously believe in a strict social hierarchy AND in their own right to continuously redefine who's lower than them in that hierarchy, as needed. There's no real "each other" under fascism, only a convenient "other" to point at, whoever that ends up being at any given moment.

it's the same mechanism when people talk about immigrants or asylum. you always have to make it about the "in-group" ("they do your important work" in that case) to make them care
