I've learned having minor visibility online is that there are people who go from liking your work to hating *you* based on their interpretation of one sentence. No seeking clarification, no questioning whether or not they misunderstood, no room to misspeak or make mistakes--you're just the villain.

This is unfortunately so true, the kind of insane assumptions and straight up lies I‘ve read from people who have some very strong negative opinions about me and literally not once interacted with me directly is insane and also why it‘s best to just ignore them and keep doing your own thing.

the fact is random internet personalities can only take up so much space in someone's brain. if they want an excuse to dismiss you, they can find it, and it's arrogant to think you can give everyone the "correct" impression. I just try to be clear/consistent enough to make that not the dominant view

case in point, I find it kind of unreal sometimes how often I'll read someone that hates me and it's because they saw a video I made 7 years ago and, without watching it, made an assumption about me. but also its kind of comforting to be hated bc of things that don't actually have to do with you

Smaller people can get a peek into that world by just having a post blow up. It really is wild seeing people let out their annoyance over a general topic on your post and you learn not to chase down every reply prepping a clarification for them to "get it"
