oh drat. the book i bought that had no indication it was part of a series is, according to goodreads, actually the second one.
WHY IS IT NOT ON THE FRONT PAGE OR THE SIDE OF THE BOOK OR ON THE BACK OR ON THE INSIDE?! WHY IS GOODREADS TELLING ME IT'S A SEQUEL AND NOT THE BOOK ITSELF?!

WHAT GIVES
But for just avoiding to rip off the buyers: anywhere will do, just put a bloody number on there.
I 100% agree that the number needs to be on there and obvious. I hate not being able to figure out the reading order.
Proust - In Search of Lost Time
Stephen King - Dark Tower
Trudi Canavan - Black Magician Trilogy & Age of the Five
Elizabeth Haydon - The Symphony of Ages
Sherlock Holmes & Agatha Christies collections
Almost all collections of the classics do as well
Author if it's a single name issue, publisher if I find out they do that systematically.
Go try and rip off someone else. This trend to try to force people to buy prequels...🙄 So not cool. I do on principle the exact opposite.
