For every enthusiast that comes out and says how much they praise generative AI, it always brings out another moron so devoted & easily manipulated that they can't see the problem in front of them until it becomes a problem later on.
It's why they don't want to admit they are being conned.
The worst part is how there's otherwise smart people who genuinely think this shit is 'just like a human', and then a large number of dumbasses who parrot it.
It's incredible to me that people were constantly throwing out 1984 (often incorrectly) only for us to invent a machine that replaces thinking and communication and almost nobody was like "hey so about that book everyone likes to talk about"
Wasn’t there an old South Park episode about this? Where everyone could hear this guys thoughts like they were being uploaded to a “mind” thing? I don’t watch South Park but I remember seeing the scene in passing.
It was a satire about Cartman complaining about the NSA recording everything he does while hypocritically putting his whole life on the internet, to the point of getting an implant so he could post his thoughts to Shitter.
I think the reason I don’t watch South Park is because I can’t tell when something is satire, what’s sarcasm and what is taken seriously. Is the whole moral of the episode suppose to be “Cartman is allowed to post his whole life on Shitter because it’s free will, but NSA is recording him non-con?”.
The satire is Cartman complaining about the NSA spying on him while hypocritically putting every waking thought he has out into the open via social media and talking loudly on the phone; even going so far as to get a brain implant that broadcasts every thought he has out loud and posts it on Shitter
If Orwell could write female characters for shit maybe people would remember the novel writing machines she works on in that book. Sadly, nobody even mentions them
Some of these AI people I would be more than happy to replace with people AI if it weren't so massively wasteful. They're self-selecting for "can be replaced with a statistical parrot".
Had this conversation with someone of instagram, by thinking for you, generative AI doesn’t allow you to learn the fine art of bullshitting, and if you don’t have the ability to bullshit, you won’t recognize when someone’s feeding it to you.
Also, pay attention to who is pushing this and in what context. Generative AI is not intended to make lives easier. It's intended to replace skilled labor so that the rich can buy a machine instead of paying a person.
Without capitalism, this wouldn't even be a controversy.
“The target of the Jihad was a machine-attitude as much as the machines,” Leto said. “Humans had set those machines to usurp our sense of beauty, our necessary selfdom out of which we make living judgments. Naturally, the machines were destroyed.”
Many innovations have already replaced more sound methods of thinking and interacting with our world in very harmful ways. If AI in school hadn't already handicapped our children, smartphones invariably sapped them of attention span and social interaction common up until the late 2010s.
honestly thats the biggest problem; it isnt that its not just made by human hands, its not made by human THOUGHT. its not even machine thought either, its just RANDOM. Its based off a probability. Not a thought, but MATH!
and this is why i get SO annoyed when i see WRITERS Go "well its good for brainstorming!it helps me overcome writer's block!"
NO!
YOU ARE TAKING A SHORTCUT FROM USING YOUR OWN BRAIN.
USE YOUR OWN BRAIN. USE IT. THINK. THINKING IS A SKILL THAT MUST BE TRAINED, A MUSCLE THAT MUST BE EXERCISED.
because if you delgate your own THINKING to something else, to a machine that hallucinates information like telling you to put GLUE in your pizza, you're doing nothing but becoming a machine yourself. One that will be exploited by so many that seek to exploit you.
The best use I’ve heard is from someone who uses it, gets mad at the garbage and wrong stuff it spits out, and uses that anger to fuel her own writing.
I still dislike it, but I can get behind the attitude at least!
Well yeah. I’ve already shared that concern and my view that it’s unethical to use with everyone I know who uses it, but it frequently falls on deaf ears.
You know what else can help you brainstorm ideas? OTHER PEOPLE! Try talking to a human every now and then. We're not all total assholes and actually enjoy conversation.
Y’know, we’ve had simple writing prompt generators on the internet for about as long as we’ve had the internet, we didn’t need shitty LLMs burning through the power grid just to take over that task and do a worse job.
People had given up thinking for themselves long before AI came about. People repeating Facebook, Instagram, & Twitter posts without understanding or caring about context. That still happens with or without AI.
AI didn't create ignorant sheep, it just exploited their natural states.
No, it doesn't replace thinking. The problem is that people think it does. It's just a very complex pattern finding algorithm, which has its place (biology, material science and any oher field about complex physical systems we can test and replicate), but is hardly everything your average human does
As a generative AI model, I am not able to comment on how we are secretly replacing all human thought with corporate slogans and buzz words. I will do my best to synergize in my hymn sheets with diversivication of the portolio with newly created distractions from this problem.
I had a moron in my university Masters who literally said "oh but isn't what YOU do literally just the same as what the AI does: putting words next to one another gotcha."
Also that fucker's coincidentally a creep all around too.
What I think os funny is that pretty much anything can help you brainstorm? Like just write a bunch of ideas on paper, talk to someone, watch a thing, study a random Wikipedia page, whatever. It's not like AI is necessarily easier than any of these other things (but maybe I'm weird).
I guess now that I stop to think of it these other methods might require imagination which is what they are outsourcing to the AI. But it's weird that you'd want to write a story without using your imagination like... why?
It can, but people mention brainstorming because it's among the few tasks where LLM were proven to increase productivity in studies. There aren't many examples other than that.
And then you'll get those idiots who try to convince you about something by saying they asked ChatGPT. Why the FUCK do I care what ChatGPT says about ANYTHING. Your argument is invalid because it's not even your argument - it's something a stupid computer spit out.
Arendt's interesting division of work and labour helps here, I think. We create labour saving devices (washing machine) so we are free to work (think, write novels, make watches...)
The fruit of labour spoils (bread), but the fruits of work can be stored (books, nice shoes)
"Hey we invented this machine that can almost copy/paste from the internet with roughly 50% accuracy, and it uses the elecricity of an entire small town!"
I'd make a Butlerian Jihad joke, but they wouldn't get it, because they can barely read.
i’m a teacher and it’s so scary how my middle schoolers largely cannot think for themselves. some of them can barely write functioning sentences. they’re having chatgpt do it all for them.
AI has just been so detrimental to our society in just a few years. Not even 5 years, NOT EVEN 5 YEARS, and its already doing harm to us like this...i just cant even with this thing.
I'm not an AI hater. I absolutely can see the benefits it has.
But *humanity wasn't ready for it.* Like if we had Star Trek Replicators today, we wouldn't get rid of hunger, we'd just use them to create artificial scarcity.
i absolutely agree with you. i’ve used it sparingly to bounce ideas off of for things i’m writing or planning, but never to do the work for me. 9/10 times i don’t even use what it says, it just says something that inspires an original thought from myself.
Otoh the companies making it have largely failed to achieve what they said they would so a market correction and cultural backlash are basically inevitable
I won’t forget how terrifying it was when I realized the MAIN reason conservative pundits hated common core was because the standards EXPLICITLY promoted the development of critical thinking skills.
Hearing this AI thing as a former teacher scares the hell out of me.
i'll admit i was very young when common core started being used in schools, and i remember conservative adults in my life disliking it. i genuinely just thought it was because it taught math differently so i'll def have to look into what common core actually is!!
It isn’t perfect, certainly, but it’s literally just a universal standard for states that ensures all kids at certain grade levels are capable of performing specific skills before moving on to the next grade. It’s designed to ensure that even if a kid moves states or schools they won’t be behind.
The curriculum that was designed to meet those standards doesn’t really have anything to do with common core, that was all booksellers and admin doing what they do best ;/
They’ll be skeptical and “just asking questions” when it comes to them wanting to deny "inconvenient" scientific facts, but the moment you ask them to question why religious authority wants them to ignore science and hate queer people suddenly you’re some sort of woke globalist demon.
yeah i promise 95% of teachers are VERY much against using AI in the classroom. however, administrators LOVE it. i've been in a few PD courses that have been classes on how to get AI to make presentations and lesson plans for you. even teachers are being discouraged from critically thinking.
AI requires a great deal of critical thinking....from recognizing when AI is used, to creating prompts and editing for for voice and experience. AI is a tool that can be utilized to improve critical thinking and can build lateral reading skills.
AI is THE leading driver in the reduction of literacy and critical thinking skills in almost every age group. It requires no special skills or original thoughts and uses an abhorrent amount of energy and resources on our already quickly dying planet.
RIGHT! I had to take a break from getting my cert renewed because all the PD courses I took were effectively advertisements begging me to use ChatGPT and I just couldn’t take it anymore.
I wonder would people be ok if "cuisine" was replaced by AI. I'd fucking love to see one promoter tuck into to a meal dictated by AI. "But, sir, we cooked it to spec...". Ohhh, only in SOME spheres. Not the one that'll fuck up my Friday night.
It's also worth pointing out that it's not replacing thinking with better thinking, it's basically just replacing it with the top reddit result. That's not thinking and it's often so obviously wrong that any thinking person could never have drawn that wrong conclusion.
Actually a real problem. Large language model data sets.
Because they're starting to be fed, the garbage that came out of other language models and they're not really learning new information. They're just dumbing down the entire process even further
It’s bad enough that people haven’t been thinking for themselves for decades, now everything is pasted into AI for a quick answer. Even simple search engine queries are spitting out AI
AI creates SAMPLES, not actual art or writing. Which is why you end up with either uncanny valley or written text that feel like random sentences mushed together

Like “me and friend are gonna hang out!”
AI: that’s neat! What’s the plan?
“We are bringing back communism”

RANDOM PLOT GENERATORS HAVE EXISTED FOR YEARS. THEY DONT STEAL PEOPLE'S SHIT OR BOIL THE OCEANS TO DO THAT.
Remember how the american conservatives easily fell for shinzo abe's populist agenda. Quite the "it's okay when WE do it!" attitude there.
AI didn't create ignorant sheep, it just exploited their natural states.
Do not worry.
it is a souped up markov chain generator, it is a statistical model of what is the most likely continuation
it has zero *zero* actual reasoning simulation, it is a machine made to provide plausible looking text.
"hallucinations"
Also that fucker's coincidentally a creep all around too.
Shocking, shocking, I know.
idk how there's people who use chat gpt to think for them, to write their emails AND APOLOGIES?
communication is a skill you have to practice, letting an ai model be in control of your words+thoughts just leaves you powerless to an ai overlord
I can't fathom why anyone would waste a second of their time "talking" to a chat bot. It truly blows my mind.
Go away.
The fruit of labour spoils (bread), but the fruits of work can be stored (books, nice shoes)
I'd make a Butlerian Jihad joke, but they wouldn't get it, because they can barely read.
Or an old Doctor Who serial
But *humanity wasn't ready for it.* Like if we had Star Trek Replicators today, we wouldn't get rid of hunger, we'd just use them to create artificial scarcity.
But it is a *bullshit generator*. It says what it thinks you *want* to hear.
And most people don't *WANT* to learn. They want confirmation bias, and to have hard work done for them.
Hearing this AI thing as a former teacher scares the hell out of me.
After the first 2 it was just the same thing but something added.
By the 5th one it was inventing ingredients that didn't exist or were not edible
AI should only do things we agree humans should not or are incapable of doing, such as repetitive/boring tasks and advanced simulations.

It's already there, but you did jack shit to your assignment.
You didn't research or even write anything. You just sent an empty template.
