I'm not sure what book you read or to whom you spoke, but you are wrong. Religion is about love for God, Jesus, love, respect of everyone and everything. The reason most people can't cope with this, or believe this, is that most people can be almost impossible to love, but you still keep trying.

Religion is what you believe.
Some people worship money, but say it's God. Some worship death, but call it God. Some worship a particular person, book or philosophy. When politics rides Religion, it's riding a natural human impulse that needs formation; some sort of teacher. Nature abhors a vacuum.
