Also good news: England's 2040 target for PM2.5 is now met for nearly everyone. Less good news: most of us are still exposed to PM2.5 levels above WHO guidelines - more works needs to be done to get there. (2/7)

Who's exposed to the most PM2.5? Poorer areas and those with more ethnic minorities. The ethnic pollution gap (difference in PM2.5 between whites and BAME) has fallen by more than half since 2003 - levels and changes are similar to what @johnvoorheis.bsky.social et al found in the US. (3/7)

I presume this is all data obtained from external air quality monitors. If so you are not capturing PM2.5 data generated from within the home. This can be very high, I discovered by chance, cleaning the oven catalytically resulted in a huge reading's spike.

Absolutely - it's outdoor PM2.5. I don't think there is data with decent coverage of indoor PM2.5 (I'd love to be wrong) but you're right: individual behavior inside the home (incl. cooking!) can lead to massive spikes.

Up until 2019 this was mostly because BAME population moved out of high-polluted areas relative to whites... Since then areas with large BAME pop (aka London and Midlands) have experienced large decreases in PM 2.5. (4/7)

Are BAME populations exposed to more PM2.5 because they are poorer? We can't really answer this question , but we show that all ethnic groups face higher air pollution than whites - we don't see the differences across ethnic groups that we typically see for economic outcomes. (5/7)

Many cities (bar Hull, Dundee and a few others) have a poor East End - downwind from whatever industry worked at the centre.
Though the polluting productive industries are now mostly gone, we have cars (which are polluting but not productive).
And so east end land remains cheaper.
