I would feel immense guilt for not tipping around 20% unless the server had done something like set me on fire.

A majority of Americans say they would tip 15% or less for an average restaurant dining experience, including 2% who wouldn’t leave a tip at all.

Adults in lower-income households & those ages 65+ are more likely than their counterparts to say they would tip 15% or less in a situation like this.

If I leave less than 15% it's because I'm not coming back! It does happen---the waitress who left us unattended in a slow restaurant for 35 minutes without taking our order and *ran away* when we resorted to flagging her down at the 25 minute mark comes to mind!

This is not normal bad service!

Same, especially after I learned that most of a server or delivery person's paycheck comes from tips. I tend to tip about 25% myself.

20% plus rounding to the nearest whole dollar is usually my go-to, but I do regularly tip 30%+ for good service. I remember one time getting an email from Capital One when I left a 40% tip and they wanted to make sure I meant to 😅

15% they'd have to have been like actively rude to even consider.

I am a 25-30% type, but I also have started avoiding eating out entirely because of the cost. When I realized it was cheaper to feed ALL of my friends by cooking for them than to pay for me +2 family members to eat out, I started eating in a lot more...

I hate the “lower income people are cheap” framing on this. My family isn’t rich. My parents were adamant when I was growing up that if you didn’t have enough money to tip 20%, you didn’t have enough money to eat at that restaurant.

I mostly visit cafes, not restaurants. In grad school I almost always tipped my baristas 25%, despite making only about $24k, because I saw them as equals.

I sometimes get free pumpkin cake now.

And then there's those of us that worked in foodservice and would only tip less than 20% if the server was a collosal dickbag. Between customers and managers they got a tough enough job

RIGHT? I tipped well over that the other day for a server who got my order wrong twice and was only mediocre otherwise - because it was Black Friday and I’m sure her day had been shit enough already without people stiffing her on tips.

When i worked at Picadilly Cafeteria in high school, by far the worst were the Sunday after church crowd. Maybe they universally all had low blood sugar who knows.

The Sunday after church crowd was the *worst*. Same at the movie theater, too - the rudest, most entitled people showed up for Sunday matinees, still in their church clothes. I have stories about the people who came to the Passion of the Christ, specifically, that are *unreal*.

Some were notorious for leaving things that looked like a cash tip for the staff that cleared tables and got them their refills.

It was really a bible verse in disguise. Great thing to pull on someone making 4 and a half bucks an hour.

20% is absolutely standard. The only times I remember tipping less are times when a server has literally left the building and not returned.

I live in Vegas and most people tip very well and above 20%.
