The General Services Administration is auctioning off ex US Air Force KC-10 aircraft.

Original cost: $88.4 Million.

Starting bid is $500K.

It would be great, except the price tag would be a lot higher. When you consider the hours on these airframes & the amount of work to get these aircraft serviceable, the price would be staggering. Plus, there is the cost of replacing equipment that's been stripped from the airframe before sale.

Someone with DoD ties is going to buy them all for $5mil, and then get a contract from the AF to provide refueling for $25mil a year after the KC-46's get cut for not "promoting lethality" hard enough.

I don't think I am the right one to lead that sort of thing. There are others who have been doing this much more effectively since the start of the war.

With something as important as this (if it were truly serious), and with as much money as it would take, I would want it done right.

If there is one thing I have learned about helping with Ukraine, it is stick with what you are good at. Otherwise it gets in the way, and we don't need that.

Fair enough. In similar vain, promotion is what we do and we promote fund-raising drives for Ukraine as part of our regular "Action Monday!" slot. But, an aerial tanker, that would be next level! So whenever anyone takes the plunge, we stand ready to do our part!

As cool as this would be, any money that would go towards this is probably better spent on drones and air defense missiles. I don’t think the Ukrainian AF is flying many missions that require long loiter times.

I don't think that is priority for Ukraine. Tanker aircraft are for long range operations where you have air superiority. The threat to Ukraine is close and they don't have air superiority. Post war, I suspect Ukraine could use some C17s.
