Listening to more of her music made me realize just how much of a titan she was, especially as the younger musicians I was listening to constantly went back and referenced and reinterpreted her work.

Another favorite sample usage is Moodymann’s “Taken Away”, which cut up Roberta’s “Sunday and Sister Jones”, a harrowing lament about a reverend’s wife in the wake of her husband and placed it within the context of the Black Lives Movement, along with a funky house groove.
I’m getting emotional thinking about how much Roberta Flack’s music has meant to me and how much she has contributed to our cultural legacy. I’m glad she was able to live a good long life and pass in peace. RIP
