There's a bit of confusion. There are tiny presses within this lot - micro presses that may have a very specific focus, but that is only part of the roster, so look at all. Things to bear in mind.
1. Yes you MAY well see your book in bookshops if you work with a fair number of these publishers. They will have worked hard to build up relationships with bookshops, but a pitfall is for the smallest, adjust expectation. Not a bad maxim for ANY publication, if you ask me!

2. Connected to this. My 11th book is out next year, all indie, some agented and some not. I'm fairly well known and plugged in in industry and know a stack of people, but I can tell you that my books are not stocked in most Waterstones - and none in my local. Get real about this early, my darlings.

3. Sales may be low and that means, if you also did not receive an advance, that this is a long way from a money spinner. Having said that, I'm sure you're aware that there are anomalies that sell extremely well and there are indies with Nobel winners on their roster. Interesting, huh? Do your HWK.

4. In my experience, you may do one book with them & should not assume further publication. However, there ARE authors who remain with the same indie and if not the first one, then later. It can be a WONDERFUL THING. Go and explore their books; do some reading - some of the best stuff on the market

5. Some books, perhaps at the more experimental end, may be better suited to an indie. On the whole - although I do not think this is as binary as others may think - they are more prepared to take a chance on a text. That doesn't mean they're reckless. It still has to be the best you can make it
