- if you are an unpaid carer, it can seem like a luxury, but it is not so. Remember that there are around 7.5 million carers in the UK and they are some of the least represented, some of the poorest and often in poor mental & physical health. It’s a role predicated on love of course, but still -

We should acknowledge that those in the role - and this was something I’ve seen and know personally - are frequently also fighting for diagnoses, resources, challenging multiple agencies where their loved ones have fallen through the gaps. For example with their SEN children & young adults -

It’s lack of funding, chaos, things that aren’t joined up - I swear some folks think your doctor gives you some sort of certificate saying ‘disabled’ and then a care package is sorted out pronto. There IS good care, of course, but often, well, there isn’t. Carers’ allowance is very small & PIP -

- PIP is an ordeal (though again you have wonderful exceptions). Something I desperately want to do should we ever achieve funding is to broaden Curae for young carers, of whom there are around 800k. There were people who entered Curae who moved from being a young carer into doing it in adulthood -

- and a startling bit of information from national organisations shows that unpaid carer numbers have grown sharply in the 17-24 age bracket. Carers are predominantly women too (this changes after 75) and of the 334 eligible #Curae entrants, 10% were men. I’ve talked long enough my lovelies!
