So I run a national prize called the #Curae and it’s dedicated to unpaid carers. There are around 7.5 million UK & ROI and this year they are showering me with some quite staggering work written in challenging circumstances and, frequently, a haze of years. Unpaid carers are radically under-rep -

- and yes in society, but appallingly in publishing. Could I get funding for Curae? Nope. What about my writing project for young carers, of whom we have about 800k (I was one). Also no. Oh we’ll do it all anyway, as volunteers. It’s needed and wanted and fabulous and community and, well, love.

So what could I do at #curae if a big publishing concern slipped me £52k?
*several entrants could do extensive creating writing courses - maybe even MA if done online: flexibly
*we could pay for a massive amount of mentoring
*we could offer respite -time away to write with funded respite care

*we could pay to support lots of my entrants with health - counselling, relaxation, massage - foundational care and morale boosts: things that mean you are more able to do things because you’re being cared for yourself.
*we could offer book tokens, subscriptions, resources - a wealth of things.

*for some of our entrants, our talented entrants, we could support light, heat, housing and food with some bursaries. Carers’ allowance is about £80 - to get that you have to be caring for 35 hours a week.

Just think: we could do all that.
