Following you down the antimacassar rabbit hole: the chair protectors were so called after Rowland's Macassar Oil, a hair oil made of imperial plant products, chiefly coconut and palm oil. Its exotic name evoked the Indonesian port of Makassar, then in the Dutch East Indies. Just look at this ad!

I visited Kew 40 years ago and was astounded by the beauty and variety of plants. Nothing like this exists in the U.S. not even the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.

At the height of the empire, Queen Victoria visited the iconic glass Palm House six times in the first few weeks it opened, and palm houseplants became a proud symbol because of her patronage.

The botanical gardens also served as a lab that allowed imperial industries to boom...

The rubber plantations in British Malaya became so valuable that Britain fought a bloody war in 1948 to keep them.

I understood the seeds were nicked from Brazil by Henry Wickham of Kew Gardens, so resulting in the end of the rubber boom in the Amazon region.
