When young and on vacation, I remember numerous Virgin Marys in what looked like bathtubs buried vertically with only half sticking out of the ground. I'm sure, as an adult, they weren't bathtubs, but my younger self wondered.

They probably were bathtubs. Source: digging into my grandma’s garden as a chile to bury a bathtub to house the Blessed Virgin in. But then we got to make the statue flower crowns after so yay? Something something idolatry…
Yep, and often the question was not “is that a bathtub” but whether the homeowner had cut the bathtub down with a hacksaw or had just dug a really deep hole, because it could go either way.
I think I'd just dig a hole. Less risk of it falling over, give it a nice counterweight/base sort of thing. Compared to trying to cut straight and balance and hope it stays up... nah.
