Midgely misinterprets. If these philosophers had been married, they would not have been permitted the time to think, postulate, or write. Their wives would have had none of it since it was not centered on them and earned no money.

A well told,fascinating and insightful story. I would point out that somenone can have close meaningful relationships in one's personal life, without being married and having children, but the overall point about the importance of philosophy being connected to everyday life is a vital one.

I enjoyed your piece. It would be interesting to consider how autism contextualizes the work of philosophers we now recognize as autistic. I recently read a 2011 NYer profile of Derek Parfit, whose autism seems obvious. Wittgenstein & Peirce, too.
