Actually I usually use them for packing, some of the carvings are delicate, and it adds a little something for a carving to arrive with all the bits of wood that came off the block to make it. Anything left over though, definitely goes into the heater for kindling.

The black fabric looking stuff on your thumb and finger .. bandage? Or some kind of protective cover? I’m trying to assess the likelihood that I’ll injure myself with this hobby. 😬 I tried needle felting before and discovered I was VERY good at stabbing myself with the barbed needles. 🩸

😆 🤣 😆 it's too protect my hands. Not bandages. I suggest new carvers wear a glove to protect their hands. I'm at the point where I'm know what I'm doing, but there are spots I'm likely to cut myself if not careful. Those i wrap.

Yay!! It really is a fun hobby, and you can do it without slicing yourself up. I have a video called Whittling 101, talking about how to safely hold and control the knife. If you practice the right techniques and maintain control of the blade while keeping your digits out or the way. You're golden.
