Once read a thing that said to find your style stop looking at other artists work so you wouldn’t be influenced and your own style would emerge. What a joyless time that was. Look at other artists work

I often think of something Prince said, that he never listened to the work of others so he would never be influenced. I thought how sad that was, to hear his riff on other's work would have been spectacular. I could never stop looking at the art and listening to others, what point is there to that?
I once went on a date with a man who said he never read books because he didn't want to be influenced by other people's thoughts. There was no second date.
Watching a Tarantino movie about working in a video store next to a convenience store where that guy got called into work and is upset about it sounds like a good movie.
Totally. After decades of reading comics, seeing new artists come up, I could see the influence of some of the 90s kings in newer artists work. In the best way. A Madureira fist or knuckle style here, a Bachalo styled pose to action there, a Kubert influenced detail pass - glorious assimilation!
"Recent events" have been a catalyst to make art again, and I'm happy that I have rediscovered my affinity for Ralph Steadman's style. I would never turn away from it.
But that's how I developed my style by looking at other artists work (by reading too much Judge Dredd and Manga) does that mean I broke the artist law?! 😔
when i was learning i would notice id add little methods i saw other people use piecemeal, but in such a manner that over time all of the little things that i specifically liked in other people combined into something uniquely mine. other people show you how to lay the foundations of what you want
