Self sufficiency relies heavily on off the grid solutions. That's why I'm interested in a solar oven. It requires no fuel or electricity at all. Just the rays of the sun concentrating the heat in the oven. Since I've got black cast iron cookware, I'm half way there. I just need to build the box.

Yes! It's sustainable, and you can build a solar oven frugally from scrap wood, etc. You only need to buy a a few items and can easily have a nice solid solar oven that will last many years for under $50.
