I don’t know that there’s a playbook but it’s been a problem everywhere yeah. There was a fair amount of those complaints in Stockholm a decade ago already

I don’t think there’s a playbook. It often starts with residential permits carelessly granted in entertainment districts as populations grow. You might find solidarity/advice/counterplays by looking up urbanism articles from how other cities have fought back?

Thankfully the mayor was present and having none of the rubbish, but instead suggesting some reasonable traffic amendments. So thankfully I think he's a good ally already. But I'll have a read, I've been meaning to read up on urbanism some more.

Oh if traffic is an issue you’ll also see *exactly the same* fights and eventual acceptance patterns play out around parking, bike paths and pedestrianization, from the 70s (Europe) to now (everywhere)

It’s probably going to be helpful to do things like send positive affirmations for the pub and other actions you like in to your city council meeting question periods, as that mayor and any councillors involved could face pushback and can use stated support in tangible ways

Yeah, I'm trying my best to help this one along. Already joined the local cycling group and met up with some councillors. I'm hoping my lived European experiences might help

A good 80% of the complaints were about traffic and parking. If less residents had cars, and less pub attendees traveled here via private car, then the problems are gone. Absolutely no chance of convincing anyone of that during a meeting like this though.

Kudos to the tiny little old lady who lived next door to the pub who was the only one brave enough to stand up to the Nimbys and tell them the pub has been there longer than they've been alive.
Also kudos to the pub owner for turning up and calmly listening to angry complaints.

It had been closed for renovations for a long time, from what I gather. So I think they just got used to having a quieter street.

They get (rightly) mad about their parked cars being damaged by delivery trucks and drunk drivers, but suggesting to halve parking spaces on the street to leave room for deliveries would make them all hate me. Then they couldn't park right outside their houses...
