Forced to confront the past once more: the very victims spend years unsuccessfully trying to forget, and never think about again.

It must be awful. A friend took his life during the RC and it was then I realised he went to St. Pat's Ballarat. He would have been young, but Ridsdale was in Ballarat then. However it was a hotbed of sexual abuse and some of the "old boys" are the most notorious convicted paedophiles in Australia.

I don’t think they can be characterised as simply bad apples, given systemic nature of the cover-up, the enabling, the attempt to silence victims (& resistance to legally compensating them). It’s far too widespread, organised, international. But it must be so hard for good people in that system.

I know. My Dad goes to mass every week. But survivors often ask whether the good people, as a collective, could be doing more to voice their opposition to the continued attempts by the church & its lawyers to silence & for instance, block their attempts to be compensated for a lifetime of pain.

Thinking of the people of the towns of Mortlake, Edenhope, Swan Hill, Apollo Bay, Warrnambool, Inglewood, Ballarat and others. Of that grim map of the western districts of Victoria and all of the children who lived in those towns who were let down. There are hundreds and that is a national shame.
