Both! Not a big fan of sketching, but whenever I skip that stage I regret it, as it makes the whole process extra complicated. The painting is where it’s all at for me and I wish I could jump into it straight away every time.

I’m not always satisfied with my end results, but when it hits, it hits 😌

It used to be the process, but now I'm not so sure anymore. That's why I've been exploring other areas of art that bring me more joy. Bills have to be paid, though!

I think as artists we sometimes have to change things up to keep it fresh! But yes, bills are a big factor in decision-making :D

I would say both for me, I always like to enjoy the process and get into the flow and finished painting makes me feel accomplished.

The process definitely , especially if I am working on a personal piece and can paint over/destroy parts of it whenever I want . Sadly, I seldom get to do that anymore 🥲

Not an artist, but a writer. I love the initial idea and throwing scenes on paper as fast as I can type. Then getting the first draft. Oh, lordly that's painful a lot of the time. Finishing the first draft is a huge victory and from there, the multiple edits are mostly a joyful part of the process.

That's so interesting, thanks for sharing! :) It sounds like such a huge undertaking to write a book, I can't imagine how to actually make the decisions that go into creating a first, finished draft. 🤯

It's more like plowing snow. You just keep pushing until you have a draft! The planning and cleaning and sculpting come later for me. It is sort of like painting because there are layers. Some of the best details come in last and hopefully the underpinnings support them or there's rewrites!

With my new vibrant flowery gouache art I'd say it's about 70% the process, and 30% the end result. I'm completely in the flow most of the time! :) With my fantasy art definitely 90% of the happiness come from the end result, since the process of painting it makes me completely miserable.

It's super hard to achieve this level of realism and I don't get into any kind of flow with it, because I'm constantly problem-solving, needing to step back to get a fresh eye, stopping to get new references, pushing myself more, getting feedback because I can't see the wood for the trees anymore.

I hope you can find the joy in fantasy covers again someday. Your covers are so gorgeous, the people on them so vibrant and often hopeful (of course I've read many of the books so I also have that anticipation of a great character coming to life.)
