Thermodynamics is a fascinating field whose most important foundations were laid down in the XIX century. In fact, the earliest binary phase diagram I could find is from Bakhuis Roozeboom in 1900, and already shows the well-known components—such as the liquidus and the eutectic.

The eutectic in particular defines the lowest temperature at which a liquid remains stable in a given system, but is usually only given at constant pressure, usually 1 atm. When pressure changes, this eutectic point becomes an univariant line which T and X coordinates changes too.

For aqueous systems, the temperature evolution of the eutectic is driven by ice Ih negative melting curve with increasing pressure. This is an effect we previously measured using the isochoric method (constant volume) developed at Texas A&M:

In the present study we pushed the logic to its extreme. As the eutectic line decreases in T with increasing P, there should be an invariant point at high pressure where this line ends, representing the minimum temperature of stability of liquid at any pressure for that system.

We define this point as the "Cenotectic", from Greek “κοινός-τῆξῐς”, meaning “universal-melt”. And its general definition (applicable for any systems, not just aqueous systems) is :

"The cenotectic is the invariant point occurring at the lowest temperature at which the liquid phase, for any value of concentration, pressure, or other thermodynamic forces acting on the system, remains in stable equilibrium."
