Teams can protect 6 players.

If you don’t want a player stolen, you can negotiate draft capital instead.

yep! any time there's an added team, they do an expansion draft where the new team gets to pick players from the others to build a roster. however each team gets to protect a few players so they don't just lose superstars immediately

Why did the Golden State Valkyries pass on taking a Seattle Storm player in the expansion draft?

The Storm had several unrestricted free agents, but the Valkyries had already used their UFA pick.

They didn’t pick a Seattle Storm player because the only available ones are all unrestricted free agents and don’t merit the core super max salary the Valkyrie would have been required to pay them. It was a predictable (and predicted by many) financial decision. I wish more people understood this.
