Leading with the crown is only one of the indicators... If it has 3 other indicators (in this case helmet to helmet while leading with the head, forcible contact to head or neck area, and defenseless player)... It's still targeting. That didn't change when they changed the rule.

What changed was they used that crown rule to eliminate accidental helmet to helmet contact from being called... But if you have 3 other indicators it can still be called... There were three other indicators... Should've been called.

But Dilly also knew his team had trouble scoring with short fields vs Texas. Going for it on 4th &5 probably better than punt. Overtime was huge gamble that almost paid off. Unreal than on 4th & 13 with the season on the line they dialed the most telegraphed and unimaginative blitz on the playbook.

The rule is that SEC/ESPN money controls judgment calls, even when no sentient, impartial observer would deny that aggressive helmet-to-helmet attack by the defender is exactly what the rule was implemented to stop.

Maybe you’re right. I’ve seen linemen carry ball carriers at least a half dozen times this season and never seen that called. Might be a rule they just have no interest in calling. Might not be a rule. Don’t know

A fifteen yard penalty after a textbook targeting would’ve put ASU on the 35 with a 1st down and 40 seconds left on the clock. Absolutely changed the outcome of the game. Refs love the SEC
