Ironically, suppressors are something that every firearms owner should have and use (e.g. France requires them for target shooting).

They don't actually make firearms silent at all, just less loud, sometimes to the point where hearing protection is optional. Modern military weapons are now regularly equipped with suppressors in order to improve communication and reduce hearing damage.

A suppressor does nothing to reduce the sound of an action cycling, and that alone can be quite loud. Nor does it remove the sonic boom from supersonic bullets. They're only truly effective on single action firearms using subsonic ammo, and even then, the result isn't silent.
