Another (more speculative) reason is that there may be ways to get the same performance with orders of magnitude less cost. Recall that once we understood thermodynamics, we were able to make steam engines much more efficient.

Yes, and I'm arguing that we are at the stage where we have the first generation of steam engines. Understanding why they work will help us produce a much better second generation
Is AGI first generation or second generation? Maybe it is a diesel electric locomotive? Who knows? It is not well-defined. There are many missing capabilities eg long term memory, episodic memory, meta-cognition
