As someone raised catholic I can tell you what they teach you in catechesis is mostly about Jesus turning things into bread. Like yeah they can tell the story of Solomon and the baby sometimes but they never told me about his sick demon collection.

I realized this some time ago when I was talking with someone who's more Bible invested & they were like "Oh where did you hear about that?!" Because I had some obscure background lore about the Leviathan they knew nothing about, having only seen the word & I've been thinking about it for weeks

Of course grain of salt, check your sources and all that (the ones I view generally do too) but it made me think about how important actually having history in theology is to have understanding and context & it just so happens a lot of creatives, artists & storytellers do just that lol.

But yes it feels wild to be in a position where you're teaching someone who's been Bible invested their whole life about things contained within it that they never looked further into or understood the historical context of, whereas for me it came from a place of "MONSTER COOL" lore I absorbed.

People may talk and talk and talk about the stories in the book but it never goes deeper than that. You'd have to like, take a combo theology/world history course to understand the depth of links between mythologies, religions and pre-religious story & character adaptations.

It really is just fun to see how and why things differ! Like how in some myths a snakes are good or reveered and others bad omens or thought of as evil.
But generally I really find it comforting when I can see so many links between religions carried through time depending on where they go

I did study art history (european/american) x religious studies(more about the iliad and odyssee, thannanything else) & the whole byzantine till renaissance(+further up)period is one big christian symbolism x societal context crashcourse.
