The crucial point is that there is no plan or agenda. Trumpism is not a totalizing ideology with a mission, but rather a set of personal and group resentments and aspirations. There is nobody lobbying for territorial conquest, as there would be no U.S. beneficiaries. But it could happen by accident

I imagine a situation where he gets really angry about something and calls the military to do a cross-border raid to “arrest” some Canadian figure. Debate over whether to obey is muted because he’s appointed loyalist generals. Before it can be called off, there’s response and escalation
