And in a few years, when people who are Ph.D. students now are applying for jobs, their CVs will show that they lived through this chaotic awful time. I believe many will (should) relocate to nations that value science and truth. MAGA has found a way to reverse the brain drain that has harmed many other countries.

COVID completely blocked my first postdoc. Couldn't travel for a year and a half.

Asked grant committees about it: "yeah no it's not parental leave or military service, so we can't give you an extension"

I have zero faith they'll take this into consideration.

Perhaps it will force the PhD students to become more creative on how they approach their time now. It is dreadful for all concerned. The scientific community will certainly suffer, but the humanities community will certainly wither.

They will. So will P&T committees. An admin made the point that Covid also caused major disruptions for a chunk of folks but they get it and it’s been fine.

And many of today's Ph.D. students were undergrads when Covid hit, and did the following year of their college education over Zoom.

Perseverance is in their veins. "I AM going to become a scientist, dammit!"

Yes. Like, none of this is ideal in any way. But at least people are very aware of the huge problems being caused to fac, grad students, postdocs, ugrads, etc.

Most of them will be the same students whose high-school and college years were derailed by Covid.
