I think of birds like this and the pelican as almost primeval.

I threw food to a young gull outside the gaggle.
An older gull charged it and forced it's bill into the young ones gullet.
Brutal.
To me they look like a Jim Henson creation (with a bit of nightmare thrown in). The machine gun-like sound they can make by clattering their bill is also rather eerie.
