Mini thread (3/4): …this will be very confusing to the average visitor – many who will only see Canyon de Chelly as a unit of the NPS that is covered by this new rule, and who don’t even realise there are people living in the park until they visit!

Further clarification 1/3: The NPS is not in the business of limiting free speech or moderating content, HOWEVER, with no oversight in permitting this type of non-commercial media at all, the opportunity for misinformation to run rampant is there.

Further 2/3 Misinformation and pseudoscience spouted through social media often encourages others to “investigate,” which can lead to unauthorised activities and trespass. This can damage both cultural and natural resources, which are often fragile and non-renewable.

Further 3/3 This activity will no doubt increase – putting the already financially stressed and understaffed NPS in dire straits when trying to counter the misinformation and when trying to protect the resources from illicit activity and damage.
