On Masto I'm having a conversation about the need for blocking replies, and while many get it, I'm still dealing with folks who *insist* that blocking replies is "bad for communication" and that "muting is fine".
Clearly these folks have never experienced the hell of the dogpile.

I once remember on Twitter having a thread go so viral my iPhone was hot to the touch because of the many unexpected notifications.
More controls are better.
Hate to say it, but haters are motivated.
We need ways to defuse the bomb before it ignites.
Often enough, I don't reply to toots asking me questions, because doing so would potentially unleash a fire hose of replies.
I spent the last week dealing with someone block evading me because my face appears in videos, therefore I've "consented" to sexual harassment.
I don't know how we fix that (other than call it out when we see it.)
Granted I'm not some fancy web engineer, just a mom with a YouTube channel and a bunch of experience with 50 year old codebases. But still. Seems like it could happen.
And yeah, servers could disregard that feature, but defederating from badly behaving servers remains an option.
Still, if Masto isn't doing it, I don't see it happening.
While I haven't used it much, knowing it's an option if something gets dicey in the comments makes me feel better about being here.
Like trying to have a conversation in a crowded room.
Seemed like a fitting metaphor.
