I'm checking this out...What I'd like to find is an easy way to convert say cassettes to lossless files like WAV files...Everything goes to MP3 and if you're an audiophile and love your classical music you hate to hear it turned into murk...

I copy my old 4-track tapes from cassette to FLAC (or WAV) using my trusty Presonus Audiobox and the Audacity software. Works fine for me.

You can typically find reasonably inexpensive audio interfaces, sometimes for free at e-waste sites. I like my Presonus Audiobox, which I don't think is available new anymore but similar products are likely sold at chain music stores like Guitar Center. Another reasonable brand is called "Zoom".

Yup! I use one of those (the next gen up, "AudioBox USB 96") for my microphone input and all sorts of on-the-fly audio needs. Works great on any modern computer I throw at it.

I backed Tangara mid-2024 and it arrived a week ago. I've loved using it with my FLACs and Opuses and MP3s.

I despise algorithm-driven music recommendations and prefer the offline experience. The Tangara player provides a vibe similar to the classic iPod, but in a modernized, repairable package.

It's not a bad goal to have. Too much tech fails to function if your internet isn't available, and sometimes it just isn't available. That's before looking at deliberate down-time, long journeys and so forth.

For the same reason I don't like algorithms recommending posts in my feeds, I don't want them recommending music to me.

I discover new music through conversation, both online and in person. Having a decent selection of public radio options doesn't hurt. I buy albums I like and it's actually fun.

I currently use a combination of Picard and Rhythmbox for my Linux PC, and I also keep a copy in Jellyfin for streaming the collection around the house.
