It doesn't happen too often in like "personal" servers, but a lot of places that try to keep this like "professional" attitude usually just end up pissing me off.

I feel like I have to go through TSA in order to post a picture of an ass I drew or something, or even responding to comments.

It… depends.
As a server owner, I’m already nervous to speak up about things like that. I don’t try to be harsh, I try to make gentle nudges or requests, but it never goes well.

I’m legitimately not trying to power trip I’m trying to stay organized, but I can kinda see how that’d feel like the same

It’s just so hard to know how much of a nudge is too much, cause it depends on the person.

But honestly I’d rather just not enforce at all than scare someone away from my server.

A nudge is quite a bit different than being barked at. If someone politely asks me to just move the convo or art to another channel I don't have an issue with complying nor should others.

I think people overstep their bounds when they act like stuff is a way bigger deal than it is or flex authority

I definitely get you when it's very trivial, but I do see why sometimes a mod/owner would speak up (as someone who has a server himself)

Like if someone is posting content that's clearly fetishy in just the general art channels, that's a pretty big NO that should be corrected.

And in honestly it can get pretty annoying if people use an art only channel for a bunch of discussion when another channel for it exists.

It's as if you were waiting in line for fast food with the art being the "food" you order and someone is backing up the line by talking a cashier's ear off.

If the owner/mods are being harsh/dicks for no good reason then yeah you don't have to give them a lick of respect.

But if they're just asking nicely or recommending the other channel for it as a suggestion... YOU might come off bad for reacting negatively.

Plus, you can always leave a server!

The beef I have is when people aren't asking nicely and giving me respect. If someone is polite I have no issue, but when someone acts like I'm a dumbass for using "Art Discussion" instead of "3D Art Discussion" then we have problems.

I'm not active enough to have every server's nuances memorized.

most of the time, places that I've seen that have a ton of discord rooms, most of them go unused and it can lead to the server just kind of dying out because discussion is so spread out

Ive made my own discord server and considered what makes sense and adapting as needs arise.

Not being that militant though about where stuff is posted.

I think this is a good way to do it, just set a simple baseline and change as the server does

I think its good to have a bit of distinction between discussion boards/art dumps, but I think people spilling over or having a convo is healthy for server interaction

it's one thing to separate nsfw from sfw, but discussions at large can be so diverse and split into so many things, trying to force different aspects into different rooms is like, oh so you just want to kill the conversation huh?

Yeah these are my big issues with a lot of servers, too many channels and overbearing staff. I think as long as people aren't bothering anyone you should leave them be. Splitting the server too much just ends up in a convoluted mess no one wants to bother with.

Like once someone asked me a blender question in an "art room" and I was happily discussing it and even finished the convo then some fuckass mod decided to wave their dick around way afterthe fact hand go "ERM THIS GOES IN ART DISCUSSION NOT ART ROOM" like ok commissar wont happen again

Less rules the better, I find. Too many and people are bogged down, too specific and people feel targeted.

Most people (fully formed adults anyway) are pretty good at self moderation and don't need someone with a cattle prod.

It's better for server health to not constantly interrupt discussion.

people looking for what little power they can get. they fail to realize that separate channels are supposed to facilitate several different discussions and topics, not make it more difficult to discuss things

Basically this, if a discussion occurs naturally in an art room then just let it happen, maybe urge people to move it if it goes on a little long, but kicking everyone out every time is bad moderation. People will feel less inclined to interact if all it does is net them a barking at.
