Honestly, I've been thinking it picking up just to see how impressive the port is in person (also because it's one of the best games ever), incredibly stuff
This and Persona 5 originally released around the time the Switch came out and it's fun how they both eventually ended up getting some of the best Switch ports
I love the NieR series to death and have played each several times on Xbox Series. For some reason the Switch version makes me motion sick like crazy. No other game does that. Maybe it's because of the jump from 60 to 30fps, but that would really be a first.
I bought it physically when it started going out of print (and replaced by Code-In-A-Box one)
Got to say I'm impresed by how good it looks on Switch and I 100% do not regret buying this instead of the PC version. Sure it may crash sometimes but tbh since I use Linux I'm used to it.
its also my favorite version of the game (if you exclude PC with mods), the new costumes are great, the framerate is stable, even the low LOD is excusable just bcs this way I can play one of my favorite games ever on the go for a great amount of time
It’s insane it runs so well, it doesn’t rank along the lines of “impossible ports” like say Witcher 3 but it’s the one that looks so close to the original PS4/Xbox version whilst having impressive performance. Plus you get the extra outfits, I love her kimono outfit and mask!
It is! in my opinion, but I also love Yoko Taro's work including the original Nier and Drakenguard series (we don't talk about the second one but it is still fun), so I am little bit biased.
Honestly yeah. Still some issues though obviously like my playthrough would randomly crash but besides that it was still a smooth experience for the most part.
100%. I picked this back up after having not played it since the PC release in 2017 and it's insane how well it performs for the Switch. Makes me wonder how a less graphically intensive game like Pokemon Scarlet/Violet has more trouble running in comparison.
Sometimes in open areas I am actively scarcely believing how smooth and untroubled the presentation is - very in-your-face feeling that what you are experiencing should not be possible.
When my son got the Switch we bought cartridges, in part because I like physical things and for the possibility of trading. Now he's complaining his long used titles are glitching and when I mentioned selling to GameStop he's like "What, for two bucks?".
Might be worth very gently cleaning the cartridges then cart slot on the Switch and making sure the carts aren't too loose in there, have physical games and a near to release date Switch model that run really well still
Thanks. My son is an old hand at this point. It's not bad, just something he notices as he's perfectly comfortable downloading and expects everything to be flawless.
PS4 had quite a few areas where performance dipped fairly significantly. The PS4/Xbox versions have no native anti-aliasing either so it’s jaggies galore. The Switch actually uses TAA which smooths things out despite a lower resolution. Overall a better image quality outside of lower res textures.
You can really do them in any order. There's a few things from the first that show up in automata but it could also be fun to encounter them when you go back to the first one, too.
I think you're right, but I'd like to mention Ori and the Will of the Wisps as well. They rebuilt the entire game for it to run so well on the Switch, genuinely insane
Yeah, this makes me give an opportunity to the remake of Final Fantasy Crisis Core on switch (to remember my days on the PSP) and I'm gonna say, that game is also amazing! All the particles and lighting 👌✨
I'd rather play on PC since I already own that version and it's probably a better experience but the game looks pretty great on Switch from what I've seen. In some ways even better than the other versions.
Honestly yeah, the only way this would be more impressive is if it was native 60fps but otherwise it's a perfect port (also how I first experienced the game)
When did they release this? I found it literally yesterday in a Japanese thrift shop and had no clue this port existed but picked it up bc I've heard good things
I haven't put much time into Nier automata but from what little I've played, I was impressed by how well it ran while looking pretty decent for a late switch port
there is a “code in box” variant that released recently though, so make sure to check you’re actually getting the cartridge if you’re planning to buy a copy
I got Persona 5 Royal recently and I was surprised that it didn't look that good in handheld mode, whereas NieR feels like the miracle port people used say about Doom or Witcher 3 on Switch, but with way less compromises to fit on it. It's the best Virtuos port I've played no doubt about it.
I played p5 on my lite and i never seemed to have any issues with it. Maybe they bumped down the resolution to get it to run as well as it did, cos i never had any slowdown
It's very much playable, but it's unfortunate that it isn't native res. for a game so reliant on stylized visuals. The good thing about it is that the 2D assets are all 720p in handheld, but the rest of the game is blurry. It's not the end of the world, but I think it could have looked better.
It might not be native res, but it still looks damn good. I didn't notice any infidelity playing on hand held, but I think that's due to how the game looks in general. It still looks incredible even on a switch lite.
I know you are talking about a ported game, but if it's well optimized you can get amazing games running smoothly like Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and 3 for example
I just added it to my wishlist on the eshop, I'll probably give it a try at the end of the month. I'm relying on this post to set my expectations high. 🙏🏻
I remember how Nier Automata was one of the most requested Switch-Ports when it came out even tho it was even a demanding game for the PS4 at that time.
Glad SE came around and delivered. And I also hope it was a big success!

Doom Eternal is great but halved the FPS.

More on topic though as someone who 100% NieR: Automata on ps4 the switch version is incredible and puts den pokey-man games to shame
I'd love to play it, but sometimes I'm afraid that some ports are not as good as expected and are a waste of money, i.e. Sonic Colors Ultimate.

Good port, though.
like. ooo they got persona 5 (ps3 game) on there!! holy shit!

Uh, ignore my obvious bias. I sometimes forget it's there. It's just a really amazing port 😅
