Oh man that era was so so stupid. Every numbskulled podcaster that took it personally when a new 3DS game came out. It was such a weird take and it got repeated so much. I still get abused when I think back on it
my brother convinced me to pick it up over Ultra Street Fighter 2 back then by telling me that “people are saying its better than BOTW” and he was so real for that because I love Puyo Puyo Tetris so much
I waited until Super Mario Odyssey was a month away before buying a Switch. Because it was 2017, I had to buy a bundle, and my bundle happened to be the BotW one with the bonus dlc. I beat the whole game then beat the master quest before FINALLY getting to play Odyssey.
You also got a ton of people playing Fast RMX! Which had a really weird side effect of people telling F-Zero fans to play a game that plays nothing like F-Zero if they wanted to scratch the itch.
I was going to mention RMX as one of these, but then remembered I actually only got the Wii U version. 💀
but seriously do folks not know the difference between F-Zero and Wipeout
U just brought me back to playing hours of BOTW and MK8D, trying to convince myself i liked 1-2-Switch, playing smaller games like Bomberman R, Puyo Puyo Tetris, Blaster Master Zero, and Fast RMX, and watching “Smash Switch” rumor videos all while waiting for ARMS 😭 (I like ARMS lol)
I kinda miss this time. Where there was so little to play I was more open to playing stuff that I'd never try otherwise, because it was all that was available lol
Nowadays I'm drowning in the first party backlog, let along 3P's and indies 😭
Kamiko my beloved. I think I beat that game about four times. All I had was Breath of the Wild, Snipperclips, Fast RMX, Kamiko and the japanese demo for Puyo Puyo Tetris for about 2 months.
sad to think the Switch 2 won't have that experience because the eShop will be immediately compatible with it. I remember the BOTW + Snake Pass combo meal being absolutely great
I’m reliving that era by finally playing some of the games I skipped at the time (because I didn’t know I cared about indies lol)
Played kamiko at the time, Graceful Explosion Machine last year, and just started Snake Pass! (Which always makes me think of @ziondood.bsky.social now lol)
I got through the first few levels and I was like "Wow, this will be a nice easy time!" And by level 6 I'm starting to see that my nerves will likely not make it to the end without a fight lol
But yeah, I just remember some call we were on when you mentioned your friend saw snake pass as 'THE launch title for the Switch' or something, and now I think of that every time the game comes up 😅
Wait, people have finished Breath of The Wild? 😅
jk (kinda, I still haven't but that's just procrastination on my part) I actually own 3 of these 4 games! Early Switch days were BoTW, Binding of Isaac and thankfully not long after launch, all about Splatoon 2 for me personally
…in fact, now that I’m reminded of how much it rocks, I feel like I should probably re-buy on the Steam Deck? (I haven’t bothered with my Switch ever since the joycons started drifting, I got my Deck, and Nintendo forgot how to be creative.)
That was a great summer tbh.
Nothing beats the feeling of starting a small sized game after a big giant open world experience. Like a desert after a feast
I tried so hard to master those controls but I made it to that final level and I just could not manage some of the opening puzzles and I put the game down. Mostly wrapping around objects in vertical space just didn't work well, the snake kept changing how it was moving while I was trying to position
yeah i remember depth perception being a big issue when trying to ascend. novel idea, just needed a lot more refinement.
also i remember its application of HD rumble was wild, at least at launch. just no precision to it at all; the joycon in portable mode went NUTS. it shook the screen lol.
Honestly, idk a better time for nostalgia than that lol, it was such a specific situation that felt so good lol, lots of really solid games that we didn’t really need that many

On the other hand, they were playing Puyo Puyo Tetris
Never got any games of Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 going though, unfortunately.
And then, when they finally did, prices sky-rocketed immediately, like, wow, it's almost like the demand never really faded or something!
and I have to live with that
Y‘all played Puyo Puyo Tetris and y‘all where prepaid to do so
Lot of hours spent playing that with family and friends.
It's very chill and stressful at the same time if I remember right...

The game taught me that I’m awful at Tetris and Puyo Puyo
It still rules. The music and atmosphere are amazing.
Peak 2017 switch indie
Also Yamato’s the best one.
She came with the sword and her airship from Fairune Blast, she go wacky
Puyo puyo demo was so good
20 hours of gameplay for $0
GEM was pretty fun too
Like people telling Punch-Out fans to play ARMS.
but seriously do folks not know the difference between F-Zero and Wipeout
I still go back to it all the time. Beat it only once in my life, which was profoundly exhilarating.
Nowadays I'm drowning in the first party backlog, let along 3P's and indies 😭
Played it last year as a reminder of my early switch life and it was still goated
Interesting.

I really miss those early Switch days where it wasn’t clear it would be a runaway success. So much weirdness!
