I screencapped this comment a while back and have been trying to keep this perspective so I can keep doing my best to do good and not get bogged down in the despair the fascists are trying to shove down my throat

It takes some introspection to realize when you’re past the “I need to help” line into “what’s the point everything is awful” territory. Took me a few bouts of crippling depression recently before I was able to tell when I was towing the line 😬
I think the first step though is throwing out the idea that if you’re not 100% on top of every bad thing that’s happening then you are a bad person. Sometimes you need permission to step back before you can pay attention to what is harming you vs helping the community.
I was just talking about this with someone the other day. As much as I would love to make a difference around the world, right now as a Canadian, I have to keep my focus and base my votes on the trade war with the US. I won't be able to help anyone else if we get annexed.
And it's not that I don't care about other issues world wide, but to quote my mom, I have to put my own seatbelt on before assisting someone else with theirs.
I think most people are most effective helping locally anyways! It’s easy to feel hopeless if you’re looking at huge horrible global issues that you are helpless to solve, and that often blinds people to the big local impact they could have if they focused closer to home
This has gotten a little traction so I wanna add, while consuming and boosting every terrible thing happening has diminishing returns, I think it is VERY important right now to boost what’s being done about it. That’s the stuff being suppressed, and the stuff that helps give a movement momentum
Boost protests and wins when you see them, boost real calls to action, boost instances of community building and good will. Those need the amplification, not all the ways that things are horrible and hopeless and scary right now. That is the news that helps us do the most good.
