You could start by showing people what we have achieved, as a democracy, and how that compares to other, non-democracies. What good leadership looks like, and how that is reflected in outcomes like - life expectancy, quality of life, etc.
From my perspective, and likely most others, democracy is a system of collective decision-making in which all participants have fundamental equality in the decision-making process.

Besides, you're ahead of the curve, most other places under threat are barely paying any attention at all.
