Europe's security challenges are best met by building up the militaries of the 27 member countries and not by creating an EU army, Kaja Kallas, the bloc's foreign affairs chief, said today.

The fact that people are even proposing a European army is proof that #NATO is broken. Requiring unanimous agreement among 32 nations is not workable. Strengthen NATO & end Russia's war against Ukraine. @acwlapsley.bsky.social @stratcomcoe.bsky.social

It's broken because of trump! It was working fine until trump's first premiership, there's always questions in America about Americans involvement in NATO, but generally they understand it is necessary to prevent war
Y’all better get it together. Trump is dangerous and he’s already talking about “annexing” Canada and Greenland. You need to protect yourselves and brace for whatever psycho stuff he’s planning to do. What happened to us WILL happen to you. Be vigilant.
You can't have diplomacy without an active deterrent!
That would be like politely asking the school bully to stop punching you in the face, he's just gonna laugh and punch you in the face more
What we need is a NATO without the Americans. Joint HQ, joint strategic forces, joint procurement, joint doctrine and ability to pull forces in case of war. Anything less would be a joke. And bears don’t fear jokes.
Without America NATO will be ineffective, too many squabbling nations, as much as I don't like the US being in total control, they make things happen without them nothing will happen
It depends whether you are happy to depend entirely on a “no longer friend” for anything to happen (or not). If you do, sure, just keep paying the racket fee.
Actually I'm in favour of a European army an integrated European army, closer political and economic ties basically a federal EU similar to the USA....... But now is not the time to be implementing it
At the moment, the implementation of a European army will exacerbate the problem already faced from Russia........ This will not solve anything, and should only be done if absolutely necessary and at the moment it isn't
If NATO goes bye bye, we need a functioning European army regardless of what she says!
Separate armies, from separate states do not work together as effectively as a single entity
Make no mistake Russia will attack if NATO goes
Sounds good to me as long as the rest of the EU implements similar conscription service system as Finland has. Then we would have 69,5 million trained reservists :D
That is the function of an army in a liberal democracy, it's to make war too expensive, it's a deterrent
Though Russia will see it as further aggression from us in the EU, well at least play it that way for justification for invading Poland
Von der Leyen just said this:
"Sometimes companies are dealing with 27 national legislations. We will offer instead to innovative companies to operate all across our Union under one single set of rules."
Kallas needs to follow the leader and end the 27 hurdles the european military has.
Given the way the US is moving. I suspect that it is going to be needed far far sooner than you expect.
And don't forget, the benchmark for corruption has been set by the incoming US government and that nation can never be trusted, ever at all, not to shit on any nation/person in the world
The last time the idea of an EU army was killed it was De Gaulle and it was the beginning of the end of the European dream as a political union.
This sounds like more of the same.
if it would mean that they split logistics, costs and each reliably takes care of its responsibilities and if there would be a competent command and all 27 would be united in what they want .. then, yes.
but in that reality russia is ruled by a cute teddy and the usa by a little unicorn.
Pragmatism, and currently the only practical solution. But 27 individual militaries run by 27 different state ministries, with 27 individual goals shouldn’t be our end goal. To remain relevant, defending our rights of self determination, we need more unity.
Let’s have a union with as little union as possible, in the one area where greater coordination and unity make strategic and economic sense; was unimpressed at elections, these sort of statements confirm my first impressions of her being the wrong choice in a critical EU portfolio at a critical time

Any enemy would be easy to overcome.

I guess that's the European federalist in me shining through.
Perhaps a unified scandinavian or Nordic army instead? I mean we already combined our air forces.

The problem is formation of a European army would bring us one step closer to world war 3
You already have the army, weapons, and technology - but incapable of defending itself.
It's a proven fact.
