I currently have to figure out whether I am making grids the de-facto play method, but a big part of me wants to drag people kicking and screaming into using measuring tape, and a square grid only acting as a range guide.

So would you say that like Fallout all the games have a sort of survival sandbox feel to them? I get the impression that you're going for a fairly detailed simulationist vibe.
Ironically not, I made it optional in the base system. So to hedge my bets and make it more versatile to people who want to play a certain way, with specific exception for Fallout relying on it, the other settings will either stay optional, or implement a higher level of abstraction than even that.
